So when your neighbor is banging on about his solar panels and his sunporch and his radiant floor heat and his super-efficient windows and doors and then says…… “so what are you doing with that old barn of yours lately, Bob? In a new and totally exciting nifty energy-conserving renewable way, exactly?” You might not have a snappy comeback.   

Should you mention you covered your heating pipes, caulked and foamed the gaps in your basement, put plastic on your north-facing windows, laid down some extra fiberglass batts in your attic, stuffed insulation in the perimeter bays all around your basement, persuaded your sainted wife to dry some of the laundry on a rack next to a sunny window?
