In the near term, most of us will continue by necessity to use at least some conventional, non-renewable energy sources in our homes. We will listen at parties while progressive acquaintances speak highly of their new “alternative” systems and how great it feels to be ‘off the grid,” at least in part. They won’t mention their second mortgages, of course, and we’ll feel a little bit left behind in those discussions. We’ll go home to our natural gas or fuel oil systems and turn our thermostats down an extra degree, stirring our families to near-mutiny, and a sense of disempowered stodginess will make us wonder why we don’t have one of those Grid-Zero homes they’re building, and we’ll dream of all that money that would be available if we weren’t filling our oil tank or paying our gas bill.
