We’ve advanced the opinion in some of our blog posts that not all “green” products actually save you energy. The word “green” somewhere in the pitch or on the package is not by itself an adequate claim. Do I owe it to the world to buy a “green” coffee grinder for my Fair Trade beans? We think Fair Trade coffee is great, but the grinder is just a machine, used once a day. Belay that impulse to buy green until you’ve mastered the finer points of green thinking. You can always trust the genuine “Energy Star” label when you find it on a product, and there are other rating bodies, private and public, which present the facts responsibly about the energy-conservation value of a product (see links).
